Once known as "the Dutch Highlands," the land was granted to the Sharp family in the 1770s through Governor Unzaga, the Spanish governor of the time. Joseph Sharp, a key figure in Louisiana's history, is credited with constructing the state's first public cotton gin, further solidifying Mount Hope's place in Louisiana's agricultural heritage.
